I WAS CREATED

Read the Creation Story in Genesis 1 and 2, the beautiful story of how God created the world and how He created You and me.  And as I always say, the Bible stands alone. But as we read it and allow it to become living and breathing in our lives, Our Stories become so intertwined into God’s Story, the two are indistinguishable. Our very lives become an expression of God’s Story. So I thought you might like to read the Creation Story as told by James Weldon Johnson. This is his lived expression of Genesis 1 and 2.

The Creation

And God stepped out on space, And He looked around and said:

I’ll make the heavens and the earth.

And far as the eye of God could see, darkness covered everything,

blacker than a hundred midnights, down in a cypress swamp.

Then God spoke, and the light broke,

And the darkness rolled up on one side,

And the light stood shining on the other,

And God said: That’s good!

Then God reached out and took the light in His hands,

And God rolled the light around in His hands

Until He made the sun;

And He set that sun a-blazing in the heavens.

And the light that was left from making the sun

God gathered it up in a shining ball

And flung it against the darkness,

Spangling the night with the moon and stars.

Then down between the darkness and the light

He called the heavens and the earth into existence;

And God said: That’s good!

Then God himself stepped down—

And the sun was on his right hand, and the moon was on his left;

The stars were clustered about His head, and the earth was under His feet.

And God walked, and where He trod His footsteps hollowed the valleys out and bulged the mountains up.

Then he stopped and looked and saw that the earth was hot and barren.

So God stepped over to the edge of the world and he called out the seven seas—

He batted His eyes, and the lightnings flashed—

He clapped His hands, and the thunders rolled—

And the waters above the earth came down,

The cooling waters came down.

Then the green grass sprouted, and the little red flowers blossomed,

The pine tree pointed His finger to the sky, and the oak spread out His arms,

The lakes cuddled down in the hollows of the ground, and the rivers ran down to the sea;

And God smiled again, and the rainbow appeared, and curled itself around his shoulder.

Then God raised His arm and He waved His hand over the sea and over the land,

And He said: Bring forth! Bring forth!

And quicker than God could drop his hand,

Fishes and fowls and beasts and birds swam the rivers and the seas,

Roamed the forests and the woods, and split the air with their wings.

And God said: That’s good!

Then God walked around, and God looked around on all that He had made.

He looked at his sun, and He looked at His moon, and He looked at His little stars;

He looked on His world with all its living things,

And God said: I’m lonely still.

Then God sat down—

On the side of a hill where He could think; By a deep, wide river He sat down;

With His head in his hands,

God thought and thought,

Till he thought: I’ll make me a man!

Up from the bed of the river God scooped the clay;

And by the bank of the river He kneeled him down;

And there the great God Almighty Who lit the sun and fixed it in the sky,

Who flung the stars to the most far corner of the night,

Who rounded the earth in the middle of His hand;

This great God, like a mammy bending over her baby,

Kneeled down in the dust toiling over a lump of clay till He shaped it in is His own image;

Then into it He blew the breath of life,

And man became a living soul.

Amen. Amen.

Scripture

Song of Solomon 4:7 – You are altogether beautiful, my love; there is no flaw in you.

Lessons Learned

I was created! You were created! We were created because of God’s magnanimous love for us (Jeremiah 31:3)! I know, I know. You’re thinking, yea, yea, but God also created the moon, sun and stars and the birds, cats and dogs. So what makes my creation so special? Glad you asked because what distinguishes us from other living beings is that everything else in the word was created which means that God brought all of these things and beings into existence from absolutely nothing. God spoke everything else into existence. “God said” and it was so (Genesis 1:1-2). But, you and me, we were formed, fashioned, molded, shaped and this is what distinguishes us from all other creation (Genesis 2:7). The Hebrew meaning of the word created is to press or to narrow. Think about that for a moment. Perhaps the greatest illustration is that of a potter. Our potter God, scooped up a handful of mud, and applied pressure with His hands to shape the final creation. Only the hands of the Potter can accomplish such artful work. See God didn’t just speak us into existence – “Let there be a Davenia.” No, our creation was intimate. See God knelt down in the dirt of the ground. He scooped up some mud and kneaded, molded, shaped, and fashioned man into a unique and special creation. And then our loving Father breathed into us His breath, the breath of life, and we became a living soul (Genesis 2:7).

Lessons Lived

Pastor Ivor Myers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLTLeCrmAXU) likens our story to the creation story. I was in darkness (Romans 1:21, 13:12, Matthew 6:23, Psalm 82:5) and God gave me light (2 Samuel 22:29, Isaiah 60:19, Psalm 18:28, Revelation 22:5, 2 Corinthians 4:6, I John I:7, Matthew 5:16). And now my life bears fruit (Colossians 1:10, John 15:5-16, Matthew 3:8, Jeremiah 17:7-8). God has made me a fisher of men (Matthew 4:19, 28:19-20, Psalm 66:16, Acts 1:8) and has called me to serve as a living sacrifice (Leviticus 4:35, 5:10, Genesis 8:20-21, Romans 12:1). Praise God for recreating me in His image (Isaiah 43:18-19, 2 Corinthians 3:18, 5:17, Ephesians 2:10, Ephesians 4:22-24, Colossians 3:9-10)!

And because we were formed and recreated by our awesome, all-powerful, all-loving God, we can truly live and move and have our being in, through, and for Him (Acts 17:28). Just knowing that I was special enough to God to be fashioned into the uniqueness of me is worthy of praise. David described his feelings of awe and wonder this way: “You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be” (Psalm 139:13-16). We were especially, exceptionally, remarkably created and that is worth of all of our praise, honor, and glory (Revelation 4:11)!

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, I praise You because You created me! Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God (Psalm 90:2). You, my everlasting God, my Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary. Your understanding is unsearchable ( Isaiah 40:28) and for this I give You praise!! In Your most holy name Jesus, I pray, Amen.
