MY BLACK IDENTITY : GOD’S LOVE LETTER TO YOU

As I prayerfully began this journey, God revealed more of His love and His truth to me. This “Love Letter” is a compilation of the soothing balm God washed over me in preparation for the journey of self-discovery ahead. I share it with you to serve as a reminder of just how much you are loved, a reminder that your life has always mattered and still matters to God. May you be blessed.

Dear African Child of Mine,

Do you know just how much I love you? Do you have any idea the lengths that I have gone to ensure that we will spend eternity together? My love for you is so high, so long, so deep, and so wide, and nothing here on earth or in the heavens above can ever separate us (John 3:16-17, Ephesians 3:18, Romans 8:38-39). I know that in the chaos of that thing called life, it gets so noisy sometimes and you struggle to hear My voice (Isaiah 30:21, John 10:27). The darkness can overwhelm you at other times and you struggle to see Me (Psalm 119:37, Matthew 5:8). Many time, pain, sorrow, rejection, and despair numb you to the point where you don’t feel or sense My presence (2 Timothy 3:1-17). But just as I promised those before you, I will never leave you nor forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:6, Joshua 1:5, Psalm 27:10, Matthew 28:20).

My child, I see your brows all furrowed, and the wheels in your head turning. And I understand that because the nature of man is evil (Psalm 51:5, Romans 7:18) having hurt you time and time again, you have a tendency to doubt the fact that this letter is from Me, or more importantly, that it was written especially with you in mind. But rest assured that My Word is true (Isaiah 55:11, Psalms 119:160, Proverbs 30:5) and that no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man. Men spoke from Me as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:20-21). What you have to understand is that from the beginning of time, you have been under attack by satan himself (John 8:44, I John 3:8) and he has used the tactics of casting doubt, distractions, discouragement and division (John 10:10) to drive you away from Me. And in his attempt to destroy you and your people, man has sought to distort and to erase your Biblical legacy (Romans 1:18, 2 Corinthians 4:2, Acts 20:30, II Peter 2:1). Satan used the White man’s greed, jealousy, and fear to cast doubt about your worth and your role in the My Word; to distract you from true worship, bogging you down under the burden of slavery; discouraging you, after 400 years, still not letting up his knee from upon your neck; causing division amongst my people, using this arbitrary concept of race and racial differences. All of this in the hopes of accomplishing his ultimate purpose of conquering and destroying you.

And the fact that you don’t see yourself as I see you (I Samuel 16:7, I Peter 2:9); or that you aren’t living up to your full potential or fulfilling the purposes for which I created you for (Ephesians 2:10); or more importantly, the fact that you stand a chance of losing out on receiving eternal life, all grieves my heart (Hebrews 4:15, Mark 16:16). Now please don’t misunderstand Me, I’m not suggesting that you shouldn’t have questions or that you won’t ever hurt or feel pain. As a matter of fact, I’m big enough to handle your questions, your hurt and your pain (Jeremiah 33:3, Matthew 7:7, John 11:17-44). The problem arises when you don’t cast all your cares upon Me (I Peter 5:7), turning to everyone else for your answers or for relief of your pain (Mark 10:17-27, I John 2:15-17). And because people or things can’t satisfy you (Psalm16:11, 37:4, Isaiah 58:11), your problems become confounded and your questions turn to doubt and your doubt leads to bitterness and resentment (James 1:5-8, Hebrews 12:15, Ephesians 4:26, Luke 15:25-32), which can then lead you away from Me (II Peter 2:20-22, Hebrews 6:4-6).

This letter, which is inspired by Me, your Father and Redeemer, serves to remind you of My Love and My Promises (2 Peter 1:21, John 10:35) for you. This love letter is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training you in righteousness, so that you may be thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17). But more than that, My Word can calm you, reassure you, buoy you, validate you and empower you (Romans 15:4). And when you don’t understand, and believe Me, there will be many instances when you don’t (2 Peter 3:16), trust that the Spirit of Truth will guide you into all truth, speaking whatever He hears from Me (John 16:13). My Word is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). Trends, social norms, cultural practices, people, heaven and even earth, will all come and go, but My Word is everlasting (Matthew 24:35, Isaiah 40:8).

Don’t be afraid as we embark upon this journey, for there will be times when My Word will overwhelm You, just as it did my children of long ago (Daniel 8:27). There will also be times when My Word will serve to pierce to the division of your soul and spirit, of your joints and marrow, discerning the very thoughts and intentions of your heart (Hebrews 4:12). And yes, this process may even feel a bit scary (Jeremiah 23:29). But just know that I am merciful and gracious toward you (Exodus 34:6, Psalm 86:15) so when you need to rest, like my servant Elijah, rest a while (I Kings 19:3-9). When you need to put it down and think on it, go ahead and let the Holy Spirit minister to you (Joshua 1:8, Luke 24:45, John 16;13). If the “meat” of my word is indigestible at this time (I Corinthians 3:2), let’s take baby steps (I Peter 2:2, Psalm 119:130). I will meet you where you are, and we’ll go at a pace that works for us (Psalm 186:5, 34:4-5 MSG). You and I together (Isaiah 43:3, Psalm 23:1).

When you’re ready, step back in time with Me, knowing that I was there, as I’m here with you now, just as I have already planned your future (Psalm 90:2, Hebrews 13:8). In order to undo the misconceptions, mistruths, and miseducation, let’s unearth My truth. Let’s bring clarity to your confusion, truth to their lies, and My light to the darkness (Psalm 119:103, John 8:32, 14:6). Know that your future with Me is bright and prosperous, free of suffering, heartache and despair (Revelation 21:4). So how about we start at the beginning, for in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with Me, and the Word was Me (John 1:1). I’ll reveal My Love for you as well as

My Plan for your salvation (I John 5:11-12, Ephesians 2:8-9). We’ll digest My Word together through a lens of love and truth, and I promise you’ll never be the same again (2 Corinthians 5:17). Take My Hand, then take a deep breath and let the journey begin (Jeremiah 29:11, Proverbs 3:5-6, Colossians 2:6-7). Let My Word transform you (Psalm 119:50, 111, 130) and give you life (Deuteronomy 8:3, Proverbs 4:20-21, Matthew 4:4, John 6:63)!
